The final step in the secondary treatment stage is to settle out the biological floc or filter material through a secondary clarifier and to produce sewage water containing low levels of organic material and suspended matter. Standard Secondary clarification basins may be rectangular (when common wall construction cost savings is practical), or circular when adequate space is available. High Rate Clarification may be preferred when a small footprint is desired or a higher effluent quality is necessary ahead of filters or receiving bodies of water with tight discharge limits on suspended solids. Secondary treatment systems are classified as: fixed-film, and suspended-growth. Advanced treatment options include: Membrane Bio-Reactors (MBR’s), and Moving Bed Bio-Reactors (MBBR’s)
